Phone numbers are one per account and globally unique. Whoever proves they hold the handset gets the number — that is how a mistyped or abandoned number gets recovered instead of staying poisoned forever.
The flip side: if someone verified a number that your account was using, your account just lost its phone identity. It still exists. It still has your data. It just cannot recognise you at the door anymore.
